Summer is once again here, and as ever it has brought with it some interesting fashion trends. So what’s hot, what’s not, and what’s making us say ‘WHAT??’? Let’s take a look.
Trends that we’re loving
Retro Swimmers: Called ‘retro-kinis’, there’s nothing more on trend this summer than lounging by the pool wearing shapes that conjure up images of Audrey Hepburn and Marilyn Monroe. Items like Bandeau tops and high-waisted bottoms are a must-have for the 2017 summer.
Gingham: The love of Gingham is an ever-transient thing – one year it’s in, the next it’s out. But for 2017, it’s most certainly in. The preppy print screams summer, and goes perfectly with almost any plain-coloured item you care to wear.
Deconstructed fashion: The fad of deconstructing menu items into their individual parts has made it to the runway. As worn by Michelle Obama this year, deconstructed shirts, generally tied together at the waist, are perfectly airy items that manage to retain a hip elegance.
Basket Bags: Replacing your clutch with a stiff wicker basket? Welcome to 2017 fashionistas! While at first this may not seem a wise move, it is most certainly a fashion forward one. Basket bags go with almost any summer outfit, and bring a stunning amount of charm to your ensemble.
Paisley and micro-florals: It wouldn’t be summer without a floral print, and in 2017 it seems as though the smaller, the better. A mid-to-floor length dress with micro-floral print is the must-have item of 2017 according to those in the know.
Trends we could do without
Peasant tops: Peasant tops, it appears, have had their time. The go-to item of the last few summers is looking a little tired, and the fashion world has moved on.
Cold-shoulder tops: In 2017 it’ll likely be you who’ll get the cold shoulder if you choose to wear a cold-shoulder top. While off-the-shoulder is fine, the ‘nice top cut up by an old pair of scissors’ look is far from in this season.
Kanye West fashion: While he had a surprisingly long run in the fashion headlines, it seems as though we’ve all finally grown tired of Yeezy. Kanye West’s line of overpriced hobo-chic has finally had its day.
Lace-up body suits: Need we say more?
Wearable fitness tech: A golden rule of fashion in 2017 – if your heart rate isn’t above 120 beats per minute, you are not allowed to wear a Fitbit. These items are quickly turning into the Lance Armstrong ‘Livestrong’ wristbands of 10 years ago, and we all know how that ended…
